Table lamps

Table lamps and Abat Jour for any room

Among the various furnishing accessories that one buys to furnish one's home in the best possible way, there are certainly table lamps, also called abat jour. These are important elements not only from an aesthetic point of view but also from a functional point of view: in fact, they illuminate certain corners of the home giving warmth and charm, with a soft light that transmits warmth and cosiness. The first to invent them was George Carwardine, the Briton who in 1929 designed a lamp with a heavy base and a movable arm with four springs that allowed the bulb to be directed at will. The very first home version was the Anglepoise, which was followed by lamps that made international design history, still a must in the world of lighting.

Where to place a table lamp?

The first thing to consider when buying a lamp is its size: it is important that it is proportionate to the shelf on which it is to be placed and, in general, must not exceed 1m and 1/2 in height. Only in this way can it be functional with its light beam, which will then be pleasant and not disturbing, also aesthetically in relation to the whole room. Table lamps can be placed on coffee tables in the living room near armchairs and sofas, on desks where people study or work, on bedside tables beside the bed, to gently accompany them towards a sweet sleep. On the market today there are table lamps of every type and suitable for every style, from the minimalist ones with clean lines and made of materials such as metal and glass, to the industrial ones to the more classic lamps with lampshades made of fabric or fine cloth.

How many lumens are needed for a table lamp?

Evaluating the lumens of a lamp is important in relation to the function one wants to obtain from it, without forgetting visual comfort, which must comply with the EN12464-1 standard. Since lumens help to understand the intensity of the light source emitted, it is reasonable to think that between 500 and 600 lumens are sufficient: since it is a table lamp, it is necessary to illuminate well the area where it is placed, usually never too large, without bothering the eye and stressing it too much. If it is placed on a bedside table, 450 lumens are sufficient for a pleasant and efficient performance.

Dimmable table lamps for every need

Dimmable table lamps are modern, practical and in step with the times: they have a built-in device that allows the user to adjust both the temperature and the intensity of the light, depending on his or her needs. There are also smart dimmable lamps, with a USB socket to connect to devices such as smartphones or PCs.
