Kitchen lighting: which lamps to choose

The kitchen is the most lived-in space in the home and it is important to make it liveable and functional also from a lighting point of view: light sources must be chosen taking into account aesthetic appeal but also the size of the room and the presence of natural light sources. The most important thing is to make the kitchen a cosy and well-lit room, in order to make the various domestic activities that take place there safe.

How to light a modern kitchen

Modern kitchen lighting should be of three types: ambient, which involves the entire room, functional, which focuses on strategic points in the kitchen, and then decorative, which aims to focus attention on stylistically particular areas. In any case, a small kitchen needs central lighting, perhaps opting more for ceiling lights to give the room more breathing space and not oppress it. A larger kitchen, on the other hand, has many more volumes, appliances, tables and perhaps even an island, and it is important to enhance each corner with ad hoc lighting.

What can be put in place of the classic chandelier in the kitchen?

In the kitchen the chandelier can be replaced by other light sources such as ceiling lights with cleaner and more essential profiles. Also to be considered are spotlights, which can be positioned to illuminate critical points such as shelves, the hob, the extractor hood or design elements. Spotlights can also be used to illuminate the inside of drawers, with automatic activation when opened.

How to illuminate the kitchenette

The hob in the kitchen is the most important part and must be adequately lit. It would be useful to use recessed spotlights that illuminate from above or in any case are adjustable: if there is an extractor hood, spotlights can be integrated into it, making them invisible.

What style should be chosen for kitchen lighting?

In a modern kitchen the lighting must be in step with the times: space is therefore given to the use of adjustable spotlights and LED strips, composed of a single body that can be modulated at will: it is a good solution to install under the wall units, illuminating the shelves where the food processor, coffee machine and other appliances are positioned. If the kitchen is large you can opt for designer chandeliers that attract the observer's attention.

Are LEDs the right choice?

LED lights are appreciated for being environmentally friendly and for the bill savings they provide. They are resistant to vibration and moisture, last a long time and are very efficient even at low power.

How to illuminate an island in a modern kitchen

The island can be effectively illuminated by means of suspended lamps or several adjustable or track-mounted spotlights, so that the entire shelf is clearly visible. If the hob is placed on the island, spotlights can be placed inside the extractor hood without adding anything else visible.
